WICHITA, Kan. – Construction at the Bazaar Cattle Pens, one of 44 projects included in the Kansas Turnpike’s recently released Long Term Needs Study, begins this week. Throughout the duration of the project, the cattle pen area is closed to the traveling public. The $3.2 million project is scheduled to be completed by mid-fall 2016, weather permitting.
The project is near turnpike mile marker 111, about 16 miles south of Emporia, and includes constructing a diamond interchange, adding acceleration and deceleration lanes, and other drainage and safety improvements. The design also includes northbound and southbound scenic overlooks to provide travelers an opportunity to safely pull over and view the Flint Hills.
Most of the construction will occur adjacent to the turnpike. However, travelers should expect intermittent lane closures as equipment enters and exits the project area and when work is occurring close to the roadway.
